Course information

T Levels are advanced technical qualifications, equivalent to three A Levels, that combine classroom-based education with hands-on industry experience. They are designed to meet the highest standards and prepare you with the key skills needed to thrive in the workplace.

At Bicton College, you can pursue a T Level in Tree and Woodland Management (Arboriculture). This course provides an in-depth education in Arboriculture, integrating practical training, theoretical learning, and technical expertise. It’s an excellent option for school leavers or those progressing from a Level 2 qualification.

With a strong legacy in land-based education, Bicton College offers top-tier facilities to support your studies. These include modern equipment and a state-of-the-art Arboriculture Centre, alongside an arboretum featuring a diverse collection of trees.

At Bicton College, students in Arboriculture programs gain a deep understanding of tree care, management, and health. Key areas include tree species identification, surveys, and inspections to assess health and ecological value, as well as biosecurity practices to protect against pests and diseases. Practical training covers tree planting, maintenance, and safe climbing techniques, including aerial rescues and pruning.

The curriculum emphasises sustainable practices, tree protection legislation, and advanced arboriculture operations, equipping students with the skills to plan, perform, and manage tree maintenance and site operations effectively. With a focus on tree physiology, soil management, and environmental stewardship, Bicton College prepares students for rewarding careers in tree and woodland management.

Entry requirements for external applicants and school leavers
• Four or more GCSEs at Grade 4 or above including English and Maths, or successful completion of a relevant Level 2 qualification.
• Functional Skills Level 2 in English and/or Maths will be considered as alternatives to GCSE, but a GCSE resit may be required depending on grade.

Entry requirements for existing learners with the Cornwall College Group
• Successful completion of previous course and maths and/or English at GCSE Grade 4 or Functional Skills Level 2.

Please note: Some of our courses may have extra entry requirements or need a bit more information, like evidence or experience. Don't worry—we’ll guide you through everything when you apply!

As part of the course, you are required to complete an Industry Placement with an employer in the Arboriculture sector. This essential component of the qualification offers valuable firsthand experience and a clear understanding of the type of work you may pursue after completing your studies.

The core components of the T-Level are assessed through two rigorous exams, ensuring a solid understanding of the foundational knowledge.

Additionally, you will complete an externally set project that challenges you to apply your learning to real-world scenarios. A separate synoptic assessment will test your ability to integrate practical skills with theoretical knowledge, demonstrating your overall competence in the field.

To achieve the qualification, you must also complete a minimum of 315 hours in an industry placement, gaining invaluable hands-on experience and insight into the Arboriculture sector. This combination of assessments and practical training ensures you are thoroughly prepared for future academic or professional opportunities.

The T-Level in Tree and Woodland Management opens pathways to:

• Step straight into employment, equipped with the skills for a thriving career.
• Continue your studies in higher education with university-level courses in arboriculture or forestry.
• Work towards professional qualifications
