Course information

Land based, work based plant operations Level 1 is the course if you want an overall introduction to the construction industry and most importantly heavy plant operations.

You will have the opportunity to carry out a number of construction tasks using plant ranging from 1.5 ton mini excavators up to 14 ton 360 degree tracked excavators and if that’s not enough you will also receive introductory training using 6 ton high vis forward tipping dumpers and telescopic handlers.

Literally getting in at ground level, gaining the experience to develop your skills before progressing on to the level 2 course and gaining your CPCS certificate for professional operators.

During the course you will be trained and given the opportunity to gain your CPCS operators Health and safety card which is the first step and an essential requirement to gain access and open door to a host of opportunities in the construction industry.

As a trainee operator you will be involved initially in basic excavation trenching etc. then progressing onto more complex excavations for example structural foundations and service boxes. All training will be delivered to the high standards required By the Construction industry training board.



Bicton College is in the fortunate position to be in partnership with Holt JCB, this allows students access to the range of the most up to date machines currently available.

This one-year introduction will explain the basics of machine operation and an introduction to other construction trades allowing students to explore different aspects of construction. Gaining a level one qualification and a CSCS operative qualification.

GCSE English and maths at grade 2 or above, or equivalent qualifications at Entry Level 3.

The assessment will be carried out by a series of practical assessments and portfolio based work books. The CPC wil be by an online multiple choice test carried out in our CSCS test centre.

Once you’ve finished the Level 1 course, you’ll have gained the experience to progress on to the level 2 course where you will be able to train towards your full level 2 plant operators qualification and have the opportunity to take your CPCS test and gain a professional qualification in plant operation.
