Course information
A practical course for anyone wanting to progress through the BHS Groom or Coaching Pathways. You will develop knowledge and understanding of all aspects of horse care and management required for the BHS stage 2 care assessment, both within a stable yard and in a wider environment.
BHS Gold membership and BHS Stage 1 Care will be needed if you wish to take the assessment. If you do not wish to take the assessment you will need to have studied an equine related level 1 programme before or have good basic knowledge.
• Know about the roles, rights and responsibilities of an assistant groom
• Be able to fit tack and boots on a horse
• Be able to prepare a horse to travel
• Know about horse behaviour
• Understand how to feed horses
• Know about basic horse anatomy
• Understand horse fitness
• Be able to maintain a horse’s health
• Be able to prepare a horse for presentation
• Understand how to care for a horses’ feet
• Understand the environment for keeping horses
• Lungeing horses for exercise
Bicton College
Bicton College is based in East Devon, near Exeter, and set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just two miles from the Jurassic Coast.
