FdSc Applied Management of Animal Collections (Part-time)

gROUP OF ANIMAL MANAGEMENT STUDENTS STANDING IN THE SUNSHINE This course has been designed with a focus on the practicalities of animal husbandry and welfare science whilst developing a sound understadning of the wider business and educational aspects of an animal organisation. By the end, our graduates will have the necessary skills and knowledge to maximise the welfare of a wide range of captive species; the business knowledge to operate independently or supoort business growth; the skills the engage with the public to provide vital educational experiences and the confidence to workautonomously with a range of species in a ariety of settings. The inclusion of academic skills and research modules will also provide a solid foundation for further study.

Learners will have the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills within the Bicton College Animal Zone, which is not only a purpose - built teaching facility but also a fully licenced zoo collection.

Industry links to other animal organisations and zoological establishmetns allow a broad range of opportunities. With smaller group sizes than other Higher Education Institutions, learners can benefit from a more personal educational experience where individuals can flourish.

Practical skills are integral to the course, with dedicated practical modules and those with applied elements to ensure application of knowledge in the field.

This course is also offered as a 2 Year full time option at Bicton College.

What you will learn

Year 1 (level 4) modules:

• Research and academic skills
• Introduction to business
• Captive animal behaviour
• Education and public engagement
• Practical animal husbandry
• Applied animal welfare science


Year 2 (level 5) modules:

• Business enterprise and event management
• Research project
• Breeding and conservation
• Ethical and sustainable animal husbandry
• Practical management of animals in captivity


Plus one of the optional modules

• Rescue and rehabilitation
• Innovation and technology in the animal industry

Entry requirements

48 UCAS points from AS and A-Levels (at least 32 points must be at A2-level) or relevant level 3 qualification, ie BTEC National Diploma / BTEC Extended Diploma - PPP Grades required (specific unit grades may be requested).

Access to HE Diplomas in a relevant subject - 45 credits at level 3 (specific unit grades may be requested).

Plus GCSEs at grade C/grade 4 or above in English language, science and mathematics: alternatives at Level 2 may be considered. Mature applicants with relevant experience but without the stated qualifications will be considered individually and are encouraged to apply.

Assessment

Assessments methods will be used to support both academic and industry progress. They may be in the form of practical tasks, written projects, essays, written exams, reports, presentations or assessed teaching activities. The most appropriate form for the subject will be used.

Progression

Possible educational Progression (subject to availability):

- BSc (Hons) BSc Applied Animal Health at Duchy College
- BSc (Hons) Applied Zoology (top-up) (Level 6) at Newquay

Possible career progression into various roles within the animal industry, including zoos, rescue or rehabilitation centre, educational establishments or within animal collections both private or public. With the rise in tourist attractions including animals within their offering, and the increased need to provide public information and education by many animal organisations, our graduates will be well -placed to meet the evolving staffing needs to a high standard which will promote animal welfare and best practice.

Bicton College is based in East Devon, near Exeter, and set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just two miles from the Jurassic Coast. The historic Georgian mansion, commercial farm, animal husbandry school, modern veterinary nursing building, world-class engineering and heavy plant machinery workshop, walled garden and arboretum are all set in over 200 hectares of historic parkland.
