Course information

The Developing Personal Independence course is part of our Independence Pathway and supports students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) to improve independent living and life skills.

Students will explore various aspects of personal independence, including home cooking, shopping, travel training, community access and physical activity.

Our vision is to support you to be INDEPENDENT, CONFIDENT and RESILIENT so that you are well-prepared for your next steps.

Within this pathway you will focus on developing your independence towards preparing for adulthood. This will include a focus on independent living skills, relationships, community and good health. We will support you in developing your skills in using English and maths as well as a range of social and interaction skills to help prepare you for your next steps.

No formal entry requirements but will be suitable for young people with an EHCP (Educational, Health, Care Plan) and/or SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) working from pre-entry level to entry level 2.

Work experience is not a requirement of this course, however employability skills and work experience is built into the curriculum.

Your assessment and progress will be based on an individually tailored RARPA (Recognising and Recording Progress & Achievement) programme. This will focus on individual targets and goals which are linked to outcomes set within your EHCP (Education, Health and Care Plan) and / or your individual goals and aspirations. Throughout the year your targets will be regularly reviewed and a portfolio of your learning will be produced.

Once you have completed this pathway, you may wish to progress on to other courses within Foundation Learning such as Developing Progression Skills or a Supported Internship.
