British Horse Society Training for the Stage One Horse Care Assessment

Small horse, foal in indoor exercise yard,stable, in sunlight The course will cover the BHS Stage 1 knowledge & care section of the syllabus.

What you will learn

After completing the course, you will:

• Be able to put on and adjust saddles, bridles, and boots – as well as be able to clean tack
• Know how to lead a horse safely in a variety of environments and identify regular field checks
• Have an awareness for the after-work care of a horse and the different rugs they may need
• Have some understanding of horse behaviour and health and be able to recognise any abnormalities
• Be able to carry out routine stable management and horse care tasks including mucking out and grooming

Entry requirements

Basic horse care knowledge

Assessment

BHS stage 1 Care assessment is arranged outside of this course and will additional costs. The BHS skills record log can be completed during the course if the standard is met.

Bicton College is based in East Devon, near Exeter, and set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just two miles from the Jurassic Coast. The historic Georgian mansion, commercial farm, animal husbandry school, modern veterinary nursing building, world-class engineering and heavy plant machinery workshop, walled garden and arboretum are all set in over 200 hectares of historic parkland.
