Bicton College Launches UK’s First Agritech Advanced Engineering Centre

New facility sets a national standard in agritech education, providing students with essential skills for the agricultural industry’s future.

Bicton College has officially opened the UK’s first Agritech Advanced Engineering Centre, a state-of-the-art facility that will shape the future of agricultural education.

The launch event, attended by industry leaders, students and stakeholders, marks a key moment in advancing agritech training, positioning Bicton College at the forefront of agricultural engineering training in the UK.

Developed in partnership with Electude, a global provider of technical education, the new centre equips students with hands-on experience using the latest agricultural technology and tools.

The facility aims to address the skills gap identified in the Devon Local Skills Improvement Plan by offering advanced training for students and apprentices.

Rob Bosworth, Principal and Chief Executive of The Cornwall College Group, highlighted the Centre’s importance: “We are proud to launch this sector-leading agritech engineering facility at Devon’s premier land-based college.”

“This Centre will give students the skills they need to thrive in an evolving industry. It shows how when employers, colleges and suppliers work together, government funding can be maximised and we can grow the rural skills economy,” Rob emphasised.

Speakers at the event emphasised the Centre’s impact on education and industry.

Nadine Howe, curriculum area manager for land and environment, discussed how the new teaching model will enhance training: “By implementing ‘block weeks’ and offering accommodation for apprentices from across the UK, we ensure that learners gain valuable practical experience that prepares them for the workforce.”

Ed Parrish, director of land-based operations at The Cornwall College Group, added: “This facility blends advanced electronic diagnostics with traditional engineering, giving our apprentices a strong foundation to meet industry demands.”

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was led by Deputy Lord-Lieutenant of Devon, John Lee OBE, who praised the College’s investment in the sector: “This Agritech Centre is a major achievement for Bicton College and represents the future of agricultural engineering.”

Attendees explored the new Centre’s facilities and toured Bicton College’s wider campus, which includes an animal zone, licensed zoo, riding stables and military academy.

Darren Evans, head of Bicton College, expressed his thanks to the guests: “The Agritech Advanced Engineering Centre will open doors for students and apprentices, inspiring more people to join the agricultural sector and helping address the industry’s growing need for skilled professionals.”
