Ruminant Nutrition
This course is designed for those who work in advisory roles within the ruminant nutrition industry providing the opportunity to achieve a university level qualification. Content includes a range of relevant and applicable topics that ensure students are confident in the knowledge gained for commercial purposes.
Duration
Three 20 credit modules studied part-time over the course of one year delivered flexibly to fit around work schedules. Each module will require block time on campus of between 3 and 5 days at a time.
You should expect to spend around 200 hours per module achieved via taught and autonomous learning to meet the requirements.
It is possible to study each module individually as CPD rather than complete the entire course of 3 modules. Please ask us for further details.
Block weeks: For those unable to travel daily, we offer full residential services.
What you will learn
Students will specifically focus on beef cattle, dairy cattle and sheep and will cover topics such as:
• Anatomy and physiology – structure and function
• Digestion: dietary and nutrient requirements
• Rumen development
• Feeding strategies, rations and diet
• Metabolic disorders
• Health and welfare
• The feed industry: structure and demand
• Feed production
• Crops: nutritional values, quality, financial values, environmental impact
• Factors affecting feed production
• Advances in technology
• Legislation

Entry requirements
Minimum GCSE grade C/level 4 in English, Science and Maths.
Level 3 qualified, (A Levels or equivalent)
Those without a level 3 qualification will be considered on an individual basis but should be able to demonstrate relevant experience and the ability to meet the skills criteria.
Assessment
A range of assessments will be used to ensure diversity in skill development, these will be a combination of assessments conducted throughout, and at the end of each module to check learning. Assignments will be designed with your business needs in mind to ensure relevancy and ability to apply to real-life scenarios.
Progression
This course can be used as CPD for industry professionals intending to, or already working in the ruminant feeding industry to support their career.
