Our Ascentis Level 3 Certificate in Forest School Leadership has been designed to provide you with a learning experience that balances theory and practice within a woodland environment. There are opportunities to learn and develop; practical skills, gain knowledge of learning and development theory, as well as essential woodland ecology and management knowledge. All training provided to support learners with everything they will require to deliver forest school programmes.

The course is designed to meet the needs of learners from all areas of; education, training, youth workers, early years, forestry and others.

This qualification prepares you to plan and deliver forest school activities for children, young people or adults in an outdoor learning environment.

As well as the 8, 7-hour practical days of face to face teaching learners will be required to demonstrate the learning and application from the course at Bicton. They are expected to commit to the completion of a portfolio of coursework which is supported throughout the duration of the course. Learners have up to a year to complete this.

This portfolio is at Level 3, and is thoroughly embedded throughout the study programme.

On successful completion of this course the learner will receive certification required to gain employment as a forest school leader, that gives recognition of the knowledge and skills required for facilitating outdoor activities using a forest school approach.

Outdoor First Aid Training is included in the cost of this course, and mandatory for pass.

What you will learn

The course consists of combined theory and practical sessions delivered between a classroom and natural outdoor space.

Bicton College are privileged to have access to secluded onsite woodland, which boasts resources to support study.

Units of coursework are spread across the study period to make it achievable, and supported hand in dates spread across the study year to assist in coursework completion after the 8-week training finishes.

You will complete 5 units linked to learning outcomes:

Planning a forest school programme
Delivery of a forest school programme
Learning and development at a forest school programme
Forest school programmes and the woodland environment
Practical skills for a forest school programme

Entry requirements

Learners will need to be aged 21 years or over and have the following; A Level 3 or above qualification.

Level 2 with a portfolio of at least two years' experience of working with children/young people in a leadership capacity.

Have considerable experience of working with young people.

Hold a current DBS Certificate or able to obtain one.

Have an initial interview/chat to check suitability.

Assessment

As part of the portfolio of coursework demonstrating knowledge and understanding;

• Creation of a Forest School Handbook, containing relevant policy and procedures needed to undertake delivery of Forest School in your chosen setting.

• Learners are required to plan and deliver six consecutive forest school sessions with your chosen client group.

• You will additionally be required to observe and report on the learning and development of three participants during these sessions.

These components of the course are undertaken as independent work by you. However, support and guidance will be provided by the course tutor.

Progression

Upon completion of this course you will be able to seek employment within the outdoor industry, education/training or private sector as a Forest School leader.

Previous learners have altered job roles in teaching to provide Forest School, set up businesses, supported school clubs, organised events.

The historic Georgian mansion, commercial farm, animal husbandry school, modern veterinary nursing building, world-class engineering and heavy plant machinery workshop, walled garden and arboretum are all set in over 200 hectares of historic parkland.
